About the U.S. Grant Guest House
This historic home has been restored to its original 1860’s time period and has been furnished with a convincing blend of modern conveniences and historic era pieces. Browse through Grant's library/office stocked with period books, civil war books and memorabilia including a civil war issue sword and a set of books from his personal library. An original 1870's oil portrait of President Grant hangs above the desk. Civil war photos and an 1869 drawing of Grant leaving this home for the Civil War adorn the entry hall leading to the library.

This Federal style red brick home was originally built in 1859 by J.W. Robinson. In April 1860 Ulysses S. Grant, his wife Julia, and their four children moved to this house in Galena. From here Captain Grant went to war leaving his family behind. Later Julia would join Ulysses as he rose in rank and commanded the Union forces.
In 2021 Daniel and Sandy Hurt purchased Ulysses S. Grant's pre-civil war home which was vacant and deteriorating. They immediately began the task of restoring its historic splendor and incorporating discretely "hidden" modern amenities. After one year the restoration and modernization process was complete. To their surprise, on October 17th, 2022, the city of Galena presented them with the
Galena Historic Preservation Award.
